making healthcare approachable at Hinge health

Hinge Health is an online MSK Care and virtual physical therapy org that aims to remove the barriers between the busy-ness of life and your healthcare needs.

the creative team at hinge is instrumental in removing those barriers and making healthcare more approachable.

I joined Hinge in the spring of 2023 for a 6 month senior illustrator contract role to help continue and grow their brand vision. As an established org, speaking with a cohesive, consistent and engaging visual language is key.

The illustration team has their hand in all parts of hinge health: the app, the website, marketing campaigns, email blasts, and social.

IFTTT APPROACHED ME IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 LOOKING TO EXPAND THE ILLUSTRATION STYLE OF THEIR NEW MORE NARRATIVE DRIVEN ‘STORIES’, BLOG POSTS AND WEBINARS THAT PARTNER WITH COMPANIES LIKE FACEBOOK, FITBIT, BUFFER, EBAY, AND MORE. We wanted these visuals to be bold, to pop, to stand out against, and apart from, their more traditional visual stylings. More illustrative. A fresher take to compliment their established look and to be implemented cross-platform.

The VA approached me for the development of their first graphic medicine book (Managing Your Pain) in the summer of 2016. Since then, we have collaborated nearly every year for several subsequent books (Vets Helping Vets, Connecting with VA Homelessness Programs, Your health matters).

We pioneered the Graphic Medicine Books at the VA as a way to reach the often vulnerable population of veterans in the US. And as lead designer and illustrator, it was my goal to create approachable books that conveyed the incredible amounts of empathy and compassion the development team poured into each book.
